The units also bear striking resemblance to C&C, though there is
much more originality here. The minnigunner, bazooka man and
grenadier all make a return under slightly different names, but the
new mechs are a welcome addition. They are the Wolverine - the
small mech that fires a vulcan cannon, the Titan - the larger mech
with the kick ass cannon and the Mammoth Mark II - the big ass
four legged behemoth. The Mechs certainly kick ass. The MMII
especially, as it has a very powerful beam weapon and also an
explosive weapon and it regenerates quickly and armored to the
ears. But, as expected, it is quite slow. A nice tidbit - some
cyborgs, when killed, don't actually die but are blown apart and you
can still control their upper torso as they crawl around! It's useless
but funny as hell. Also - Cyborgs get killed too when walking on
tiberium vines. that stuff is really nasty, as it kills in seconds.
A word on the waypoint system, as it is a totally new concept.
Essentially waypoints are predetermined pathways you can set up
on the map. You click on the waypoint button and place the first
waypoint somewhere. Then you place the next and it is connected
to the first with a colored line. And so on, you place as many as
you like. Then, any group of units can be selected and directed to
move to one of the waypoints. What happens then is that they
follow the route to the next waypoint in line until they reach the last
one. What's unique is that you don't select a unit and assign it it's
temporary waypoints, like in Starcraft. Here the waypoints are
permanent way signs (until you remove them, that is) to be used by
any unit you like. Each waypoint path you set up like that will have
a different color, so you don't get confused. I must confess that the
version I played did not have the talking computers or almost any
feedback from the units in the game. I lost several armies as I sent
them somewhere and they got killed by vines on the way without
saying a word. So, I understand that the game is not complete, and
therefore I am optimistic. TS has the inherent coolness it to be a
great game, but it can be so much more. I hope Westwood will
revise some of their sounds and explosions, as I literally missed a
bridge explosion by blinking!
