This is an translation out of the great German Mag, PC Games, Issue 3/99 Alex
Many are considering the horrible artificial intelligence, especially the routefinding, in C&C and RA as the worst thing in both games. This is why Westwood is under a lot of pressure creating a functional AI for Tiberian Sun, while they already promised such feature for Red Alert. In the last issue of the German Mag, PC Games, the best selling Mag in Europe, a big TS special was included. They had an explanation for the Script-based Routefinding, which I translated exclusively for Tiberian Explosion.
"Nothing can annoy more than a bad units' artificial intelligence. Especially, when your brave guys cannot find their way to the point you told them to go to. Westwood promised that these routefinding-calculations in Tiberian Sun will be much more effective than in the predecessors. Our picture shows you how this could work. Basically, a grid lies over each map, that is analysed permanently by the units' AI. Every building among woods, rocks etc. owns a certain amount of space, which reduces the available space. As the green radar indicates, the game always calculates only the near environment of the unit, since the calculation time would be too high. Therefore the AI touches forward slowly from one part of the map to another, while the goal is always used as rough orientation help, until it finally is inside the green radar of the unit.
