TS Tournament - Daniel
Global Dominence will be holding a TS clan tournament after the game's release. Sign up on their web site.
Good News for Australians... - Daniel
Hitmann from BG:TS just got off the phone with the people at Harvey Norman and they will be selling the Platinum Edition! It will probably cost about $80 or $90 ($AU). (I think you have to pre-order from Harvey Norman).
The special edition will also be available for pre-order from The Gamesman in New Zealand for $100 (I take it thats $AU!).
Free TS Stuff (in Sweden) - Daniel
Click here to enlarge The Swedish store, Åhléns, is giving away a free mouse mat to everyone who pre-orders TS from them (while supplies last). It's worth 99 Swedish Kronor (about $12). Also, they get a chance to win a special Tiberian Sun wristwatch worth 499 SKR ($60). There are only 30 of these available though. The game will cost 399 SKR ($49).
TS Music Video! - Daniel
Bebo from TS Galaxy was also at the preview event in Germany and played the game! He will write a big preview in the next few days. For now, here is something interesting that Bebo found out:
  • There will be a huge advertising campaign for TS
  • They are even making a music video!!
  • They are using a song from the 80s called 'Two Tribes'
  • The song is written by the group 'Frankie goes to Hollywood'
  • The song has been remixed by 'TAM' (Think About Mutation)
  • The song and the video are really good.
Giga Preview - Daniel
Giga, the daily German Computer TV Show has written a preview of Tiberian Sun, which they played at the Preview Event in Duisburg, Germany. Unfortunately it is in German, but here are the main points:
  • Release date ("T-Day") - August 26th 1999
  • The game looks finished, and it looks damn good.
  • WW usually give out 400 reference copies of the game, but this time they are not, to prevent illegal copies.
  • The previewer played the first 4 Nod missions, out of a total of up to 25.
  • In Germany, 350,000 copies will be produced at first, then eventually up to one million.
  • The previewer thought the game was very good and will be very popular.
You can read the whole thing at BG:TS.
Nod Units Information - Daniel
Bounty from BG:TS has recevied yet more unit information from Jimmy, from the official Prima hintbook. This time it's all Nod units:
Stealth Tank:
This light battle tank has the ability, thanks to Tiberium research,to cloak inself when not attacking.Stealth Tanks fire a pair of orckets, much like the Attack Cycle, and are effective against ground and air targets.Infantry can spot a Stealth Tank,as can GDI base defences. The biggest enemy of this unit is the mobile sensor array.

Devil's Tongue:
These large, dangerous units are capable of instilling fear in any GDI unit. The Devil's Tongue fires gouts of pwoerful flame on any and all targets nearby. This attack is most effective against infantry and struuctures, but can still severely damage vehicles.Devil's Tongues are capable of traviling underground and popping up to surprise unsuspecting GDI forces from behind. The only major drawback to this unit is its relatively weak armor.

There are three more at BG:TS.

Short Chat with Rade - Daniel
Rade stopped off in #TS again and had a small chat. You can see the unedited log, here. Here are a few questions:
Neophyre: What is the coolest strategy u have seen used by the AI when u have been playing against it?
Rade: Coolest strategy by the AI...It stole my MMk.II with a hijacker once. Pissed me off.

Neophyre: What are you going to do since you have finished TS? Any new projects?
Rade: What am I doing next? More RTS stuff of course.

Neophyre: How did the whole C&C idea come up? Why is Kane bald?
Rade: Kane is bald 'cause of Tiberium poisoning. Either that or he shaves his head.

Neophyre: Any chance of getting Metallica to do the sound track for the next C&C game?
Rade: Metallica doing C&C music? No way. We'd blow our budget.

Neophyre: When is the C&C movie coming out?
Rade: I have nothing to do with that so I don't know what's going on with it.

More Units Info - Daniel
Bounty from BG:TS, has received some more information about the GDI units from the Official Prima Hintbook:
Ghost Stalker:
While the Ghost Stalker has all the drawbacks of regular infantry, he is much more powerful.Instead of being armed with a simple gun, the Ghost Stalker packs a powerful laser that can destroy many Nod vehicles with a single hit,and even more powerful Nod units with just a few hits. Ghost Stalkers aren't capable of firing quickly,so they can be easily overwhelmed by large forces. The Ghost Stalker is also able to demolish enemy structures merely by entering them, but unlike the engineer, doing so does not destroy the Stalker. Used well,a single Ghost Stalker can destroy an entire Nod base. (Cool no?)

Attack Cycle:
The fastest ground unit possessed by the Brotherhood. Attack Cycles are the premier scouting unit. Fast, sneaky, and able to cross most terrain. Attack Cycles mount twin rocket launchers that defend them against ground and air attacks. They trade some armor for speed, so they cannot take much damage. However, their incredible swiftness and powerful attacks are generally more than enough to keep them safe.

Check out the rest at BG:TS.
C&C: Best Soundtrack - Daniel
Gamespot recently had a reader poll of The Ten Best Game Soundtracks. Anyway, C&C came in at number 1!
Plat Ed in Aus - Daniel
Julien Marr sent this to BG:TS.
For anyone in Australia, I rang EA this morning (I scammed there number for businesses ;) And they said that you can preorder the special edition from Harvey Norman. I still have to check this out...
(email me if you want the Melbourne number)

The Truth is Out There - Daniel
Well, actually, it's at BG:TS. They have some exclusive information about Kane's past, present, and future. However, reading it could ruin the whole Tiberian Sun and C&C plot for you!
Ambiguous Screenshots - Daniel
These new sidebar pics are from Gamespot UK. It's possible these images have been touched up, and may not be authentic, but here they are anyway:
Hunter-seeker Droid - Notice how it's ready for 'release'. You cannot control it, it will just attack the nearest enemy.
Ion Cannon - Looks like fun!
Jumpjet Infantry
Mammoth Mark II - That's the BIG one!
New York - "Big Shindig" - Daniel
PCG Online posted this:
"At last! Westwood's highly anticipated real-time strategy game, Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun, has gone gold. What's that fancy talk mean? It means you'll be able to wrap your grubby little hands around it toward the end of August. And if you're lucky enough (or unlucky, depending on your point of view) to live in NYC, Westwood is planning a big shindig at the Virgin Megastore in Times Square to celebrate the game's release."
SO if you live in, or near NYC, I suggest you get down to Virgin on the day, unless of course, you've already got TS, in which case you'll be playing it day and night.
More Unit Info from Hintbook - Daniel
StarFurey2 has sent some more new information from the official Prima hintbook to Bounty of BG:TS:
Hover MRLS:
The mobile rocket launching system is a vehicle designed to create maximum damage in minimum time. The rockets it fires are capable of damaging both ground-based and aerial units, and its hovercraft design allows this vehicle to negotiate vitually all terrian and travel over water. A great coverage unit for amphibious assualts, the Hover MRLS also makes a decent scout and a great support unit for large-scale base attacks.

Disruptor:
The most dangerous unit to both friend and foe is the powerful Disruptor. Armed with a unique weapon that destroys whatever it hits by literally shaking it apart. Disruptor beams cannot distinquish between friendly units and enemy ones. Best used from the flanks to avoid casualties from friendly fire. Disruptors can cut massive holes in the enemy lines, but are themselves easily destroyed.

Check out BG:TS for info on three more GDI armoured units.

Future C&C Games - Daniel
Bounty from BG:TS found out some interesting information about future C&C Games. According to him, Tiberian Twilight will be an add-on pack for Tiberian Sun. Also, there are three more first-person C&C games planned, in the worlds of RA, TS and TT.

Rade in #TS - Daniel
Rade recently popped into the #TS chatroom. He answered loads of questions. Here are a few of them:
Tiberium33: Can tanks fire over walls if they are on higher ground?
Rade: Yes, tanks can fire over walls if they are on higher ground.

Tiberium33: Aprox. how long would it take a hard core gamer to beat TS?
Rade: How fast could a hard core gamer beat the game? I believe the record I've seen is 9 hours for 1 side. This was from someone who has played the game through at least a dozen times.

Tiberium33: When you sell refineries do you only get a small portion of the cost? e.g. in TD you only got 300 cred. cuz of the 1400 cost of the harvester?
Rade: It works like it did in TD.

You can see the whole chat log here.
PCG Advert - Daniel
JD from BG:TS noticed a new two-page TS advert in PC Gamer (US). He describes it here:
It's a double page ad with a big new background image of GDI soldiers attacking a Nod base from a drop ship, supported by a mech of some sort. The Nod base is being defended by an Obelisk and some banshees. Along the bottom are a few small shots, some of which are definitely new, and the caption is "Get ready to command the future".
I don't live in the US, but hopefully someone else will scan it soon.
Prima Hintbook - Daniel
Somebody sent an e-mail to BG:TS. Apparently, they received the official Prima TS Hintbook early. Here is some of the info about GDI units:
Disc Throwers:
The basic idea of the hand gernade has been reowrked by GDI technicians. Rather than lobbing a small sphere,DGI's grenadiers hurl explosive discs that fly much farther. The discs explode upon contact with an enemy unit.If they miss, thediscs skip along the ground, bouncing off wall or canyon sides, often exploding deeper behind enemy line,or they bounce back and explode in front of the trooper who thew it.

Medic:
One basic GDI principle is that every man, even the lowiest infantryman, isvalible.GDI has developed effective medics to help keep infantry units safe. While medics themselves are defenceless, they can revive the msot gravely wounded soldier and get him ready to fight again, medics, unfortunately, are unable to heal themselves.Another medic must heal them.

Jumpjet Infantry:
Combination light infantryman and jet pack. These troops are able to fly over the battlefield, saftly out of range of many of the broutherhood's weopons.Jumpjet infantry, because of their aerial mobility, are able to bypasss any terrain ob the battlefield-even water-to reach the actionn.Although extremely susceptible to rockets and SAMs,they're one of the most effective ways to take care of Kane's ground based defenses.

Check out BG:TS for the rest.
GDI Intro not complete - Daniel
Federal has informed Bounty of BG:TS that some key parts of the GDI introduction were missed out in the Promotional Video. One scene they missed out showed McNeil in a GDI Training Facility. So Westwood haven't given away everything!
GDI Site Updated - Daniel
The Official GDI Web Site has been updated. Here's an excerpt:
NOD "Cyber-terrorists" recently cracked into and then diverted loyal citizens away from the official GDI website, a GDI official admitted last week. While no physical damage was done to the GDI Internet backbone or attached hardware, visitors were routed into the NOD website run by an underground group of NOD sympathizers acting from an unknown location.
Also, here's another interesting bit:
Meanwhile, public sentiment toward the Brotherhood of NOD is growing by an average of 2.6 each month since the emergence of the first NOD website over 1 year ago. GDI officials were not available for comment on this alarming statistic.
You can read it all at the Official TS Site. Just click on the GDI logo to go to that section.

THIS IS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Daniel
TS HAS GONE GOLD! Yesterday, the following e-mail was sent out to several TS webmasters at 12:40am EST this morning:

Hi everyone,

Thought I would check in with you all. Just the following little tidbit of news to report. You heard it before anyone else...

-VT!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE COMMAND & CONQUER TIBERIAN SUN GOES GOLD

Westwood Celebrates Completion of the Third and Most Anticipated Installment in the Command & Conquer Universe

LAS VEGAS, NV, Aug. 2, 1999 - Westwood Studios today announced that couriers have been sent to duplication plants around the globe with the final version of 1999's most anticipated game, Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun(TM). The game will start shipping soon and is scheduled to hit retail shelves worldwide on Aug. 27.

Command & Conquer is the most successful computer strategy game franchise in history with better than 10 million units sold worldwide. The demand for Tiberian Sun has been unprecedented, with game journalists from around the world traveling to Westwood to see the game, hundreds of fan websites springing up on the Internet, and retailers ordering copies in record numbers.

Consumers who pre-order Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun from Babbage's, Electronics Boutique or the Westwood online store will get a chance to purchase the limited Platinum Edition, in which only 50,000 will be available.

Set in the early 21st century, Tiberian Sun once again pits the Global Defense Initiative (GDI) against the Brotherhood of NOD in an epic struggle for control of the planet. With an engaging storyline that unfolds as play progresses, players will learn the reason for the outbreak of Tiberium that has poisoned the Earth, and what happened to the notorious NOD leader Kane, who was presumed dead at the end of Command & Conquer.

Tiberian Sun features an all-new game engine and improved controls that will allow players to command their forces with even greater ease. Westwood has created a more exciting and dangerous battlefield with dynamic 3D terrain, realistic physics and a fully reactive environment. Explosions leave craters. Lakes and rivers freeze. Ion storms cripple high-tech weapons. Forest fires rage out of control, and winds carry poison gas clouds.

Multiple levels of warfare allow players to cripple opponents from afar or get up close and personal in an all-out ground war. GDI and NOD have distinct styles, units and abilities, providing unlimited tactical and strategic choices in the struggle for global domination.

Players can travel under, over, or on the terrain as they employ devastating new weapons, including the Devil's Tongue, Hunter-Seeker Drones, Jump-Jet Infantry, Disruptors, Stealth Generators, genetically engineered cyborgs, the Firestorm Defense and many more.

Dynamic colored lighting brings the mood and atmosphere alive. Stealth missions are set in the deep blue of early night. Bases on full alert come alive with sirens and spotlights in search of intruders.

Tiberian Sun features enhanced Local Area Network and Internet play. Up to 8 players can engage in fierce combat over a LAN and players can go head-to-head via the Internet and Westwood Online. Find and challenge opponents from all over the world with just the click of a button without ever leaving the Tiberian Sun environment. A built-in worldwide ranking system allows players to track their victories and defeats against other Internet gamers. Expanded multiplayer options also include random Battle Map(tm) generation, Battle Clan(tm) support, and four new handicapping controls.

Tiberian Sun's minimum system requirements are a Pentium 166 MHz with 32 MB of RAM, a quad-speed CD drive, a 16-bit sound card, and a Direct X(tm) compatible video card.

Big New Movie - Daniel
This is an OFFICIAL Promotion Trailer, released, I believe by Westwood themselves! It was uploaded by TS Galaxy, who got it from the German magazine, PC Games. It is taken directly from the game (not a filmed monitor) and is just over five minutes of amazing Tiberian Sun footage! It starts with the GDI intro sequence, then shows various in-game scenes and cut-scenes going through the opening missions. The only down-side is the size: 42Mb! But it's worth it, it's a superb quality movie, with outstanding music. Definitly highly recommended. Download it right now!! It's the next best thing to playing the game!!!

Orca Transport Info - Daniel
Sociopath from TS Nation has posted the 2nd part of his log from his visit to Westwood:
First off lets look at the picture above, you see the sleek design of the troop transport carring its load of vital infantry accross raged terrain. The ORCA class is the epitimy of advancement, its verticle take off and landing abilities allow it to move freely in all directions and land virtualy anywhere. A while back some one asked Arron about the ORCA and he replied by saying it wasn't in the game anymore, or thats how it was reported. This was a drastic missunderstanding as I assure you the ORCA is still in the game, but it is limited with certain technical lockouts. Remember the Chinook from Red Alert? It was only Buildable in multiplayer so in a way its not in the game, but its still used, the same applies to the ORCA Transport, although the same goals can be accomplished by the use of an APC in a Carry-All some missions will require the special touch of the troop transport.
Chat with Cohen - Daniel
Ravage from RSN had a little chat with Aaron Cohen. Here's one of the questions:
Ravage: When loading units into the troop transport, can you select a group of units and send them into the transport and forget about them knowing that all will make it into the transport, or is it still like it is in C&C1 where you have to put them in the transport one by one? And how many infantry can the orca troop transport hold?
Aaron Cohen: okay, about the transports... you can put all five guys into the transport, not one by one.
Censored in Germany! - Daniel
TiberianSun.de posted this sad news about the German version of TS:
  • The human soldiers are replaced by robots. That means oil instead of blood when they get killed.
  • The cutscenes are cut. The one in the English version where the GDI soldier gets run over by the Devil's Tongue Flametank, one will not be able to find in the German version. Further mutilations are to follow...
  • Ex-Lead Designer Erik Yeo said the following: [...] As I understand it, your government has certain guidelines for certain (force containing) contents. Particularly if humans kill other humans surely which we will do this at times [...] This time the cutscenes are more violent and are directly bound to the story[...]
Louis Interview - Daniel
TiberianSun.de interviewed Louis Castle of Westwood. BG:TS translated it:
Gleb: Is it true that TS achieves gold status next week?
Louis: Yes, we expect to achieve gold status in the next days (or hours;-).

Gleb: What is your favorite feature or favorite unit?
Louis: My favorite unit is the EMP Cannon. It enables it to make attacking units equal on the ground.

Gleb: What was your function during game design?
Louis: I actually had no direct influence on the design.

Railguns in 10-20 years... - Daniel
Jon sent this information to TSNNZ:
Actually, tanks that use rail guns are not too far away at all.. give it 10-20 years. Once hydrogen fuel cells are perfected, a perfect power supply will be available for such guns.. but they don't need as much power as a power plant produces to be effective.

Right now rail guns are only 2 percent efficient which is FAR less than standard combustive guns. But give the designers of them another ten years or so and that will improve.

They can fire up to about 10km/s (optimal), as apposed to about 7km/s for conventional guns. If you remember your physics formulas this means that they are significantly more destructive then conventional weapons.

Here are some links on rail gun technologies:
http://www.cmn.net/~molly/railguns.html
http://physstud.jmu.edu/Larson/project.htm

I hope you found some of this interesting :)

Well, it seems the C&C Time Period is about right, hehe :)

Pulse Cannon - Daniel
RSN have found out from Aaron that the Banshee will have a pulse cannon.
Not in the Shops - Daniel
Sica sent this little snippit of information about the TS Platinum Edition to TS.net.nz:
I asked EB and Game here about the Platinium Edition. EB said, "Sorry it's not comming out here" while Game said "No because its not on the Playstation yet" I tried to explain it was a special version for the PC but he twisted his face into a confused expression, trying to comprehend a special edition of a PC game with the same name as a PS range of game.
So that makes it definate that if you want to get the Platinum Edition, you will have to pre-order the game.
TumSun going down - Daniel
TiberiumSun.com are changing hosts so will be down for a day or so.
"Lamers and Liars" - Daniel
Bounty from BG:TS has written a long post about the state of the TS community. Here's an excerpt:
This is simply not right and the people who do this should be ashamed of themselves and should realize just how lame they act. It makes me sick to my stomach when I see some things happen like this, it just really annoys me. I've ran Tiberian Sun and StarCraft clans and I see a lot of losers and lamers in that type of situation, but never have I seen the garbage there like I've been seeing lately by some of you.
Check out BG:TS for the rest of it.

Sociopath Visits Westwood - Daniel
Sociopath, from TS Nation just got back from visiting Westwood Studios, the lucky s*d. Anyway, for the next few days now he'll be writing a few paragraphs about it. Here is a bit of today's report:
The coding itself is pretty much complete. What we're waiting for now is final bugs, and for certain staffers to admit there are bugs and stop making bets saying "I'll give you donuts if it exists". Sorry Rade, but that was just really funny. Okay so the game coding and Art is done, now you have a buncha lucky people sitting down forcing bugs possibilities so that when the final product goes to the selves it won't be a buggy peice of junk, be gratefull, Westwood is a a great company and they deserve to be praised in all aspect for producing this spectacular work of art. Rest assured you will have the game, and it will be the greatest thing you've ever seen, at least till Tiberium Twilight.
Go have a look at TS Nation for some more.
