AUGUST NEWS Week 3

TS SHIPPED??? - Daniel
Someone sent in this e-mail to TiberiumSun.com:
For those who had the overnight deal with UPS, you will get it tommorow, and for those of you who had normal shipping, you will get it monday. Time to break out the kegs and spirits and PLAY TS! Woohoo!!
Not sure if this is true, because EA said it was to begin shipping on Tuesday 24th August 1999, but there's no reason why they couldn't ship it today. So if you've pre-ordered, and this is true, then you should receive Tiberian Sun within the next few days! E-mail me if you have any info on the release date in your area.

Special Offers in UK - Daniel
I went up to Edinburgh in Scotland today, and all the games stores I went in to, were, of course, advertising Tiberian Sun. Here are the details of my observations:

Electronics Boutique
My first stop was EB, where as soon as I walked in I saw a huge display stand full of, sadly, empty boxes of TS, with 'Coming Soon' logos. They also had some large posters which said 'Out Now'. I asked the assistant and he said the game would be released on Friday 27th. Anyway, here is their offer:

Free T-Shirt* and Double Loyalty Points when you Pre-order and Purchase Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun. Plus, an Extra 2000 points, worth £5, for All loyalty card holders who purchase Command & Concquer Tiberian Sun for PC CD Rom.
To take advantage of this, you must hold an EB Loyalty card, which costs £2. This entitles you to a quarterly magazine and many more reductions and special offers!
And that's the best offer I found! I also asked if I could keep their promotional poster after the game's release, and they said yes!

Game
My next stop was Game, where again they had a huge display stand as well as some massive dummy boxes (which I was allowed to keep after the release). Anway, this is their offer:

Receive a fantastic free pen & poster* when you pre-order your copy of Tiberain Sun. Freephone 0800 0280923
It's a really cool silver pen and the poster is quite nice too. I think it's the Official Prima Hintbook poster, but I'm not sure.

HMV
What does it stand for anway? Well, they are offering the following:

Free Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun watch* when you reserve a copy with a £5 deposit.
I can't imagine it's a very good watch if it's for free, but still not a bad offer.

Virgin Megastore
Finally, I visited Virgin, who had a few posters and a gigantic dummy box. (which would be too large for me to carry home!) Anyway, there slightly unusual offer is as follows:

Free Commandos Courier Poster* when you reserve your copy of Tiberian Sun. Why? Who knows!
I don't know what a Commandos Courier poster has got to do with TS, unless it means C&C: Commandos, now known as C&C: Renegade.

*All of these offers are valid for a limited period only. While stocks last.

I've updated my International Release Dates/Prices/Special Offers Page, so check that out!

Virus in TS Warez - Daniel
It has come to my attention that the warez version of Tiberian Sun has a virus, or some copies of it do. Hahahahahaha! Serves all those criminals who downloaded it right! I told you not to download it, didn't I? For the rest of us law-abiding citizens, there is no chance a legal bought copy of TS will have the virus.

TS Times Square Event - Daniel
TSNNZ has posted a report on the preview event in Times Square, New York, NY. There is a lot of interesting information in it, including the fact that only 40,000 Platinum Units have been released worldwide! So if you get one, you are very lucky!

Requirements Q&A - Daniel
Lionel from TS Center asked Rade this question:

Lionel: Just a quick and simple question to see if I will be able to play TS on my PC. Will TS work on a Pentium 200mmx with a 1 mb graphics card? Rade: Probably not, we require a minimum 2MB video card and recommend a 4MB card. You could try it in 640x400 mode, though I can't make any promises that it will work.
Well, I doubt this affects many people, because nearly all PCs bought in the last 3-4 years should have at least a 2Mb graphics card, and if not, they should have been upgraded! I'm OK though, with a 16Mb 3D card!

Another Official Site? - Daniel
PsychoGrug sent an e-mail to BG:TS saying that he has found a new page on the official site, which isn't linked to. Click here to see the Mechsuit page.

Rade Chat Transcript - Daniel
Christopher Warsh has written down the recent video chat with Rade. You can now read it here. Here's a small excerpt:

DD: How long does it usually take, as far as a game of this size, I guess, to check it for all the bugs. Because a lot of products recently, especially in the last year or two, have been released, and its just been, its ridiculous! All the bugs and the problems, and I think, well, sometimes it the fault of the developer, but I get the sense that it’s the publisher pushing to release them too quickly.
Rade: That’s definitely not the case here. We don’t want to push the game out until its ready. It is our flagship title, naturally we have a lot of pride behind it. We don’t want to see it get riddled with bugs and have all the fans come after us and mob us. I think some of them know where I live, so we got to be careful about that.

New(?) Pics - Daniel
TiberiumSun.com have posted two new stunning screenshots, and BG:TS have noticed these two things:
Disruptor Tank firing! Disruptor Tank
They say this is the first image of a Disruptor tank firing, but we actually posted one from the PC Gamer UK Review a few weeks ago.

Mammoth Mark II firing! Mammoth Mark II
This cool shot is of the Mammoth Mark II firing it's railguns.

The graphics in both of these screenshots are outstanding, so there is obviously a lot of variety depending on the system you play on, and resolution you play at.

More Info from Aaron - Daniel
Here is some more information from All Games video chat with Aaron Cohen, Westwood PR Manager:

6 Days Left... - Daniel
Do I really need to write anything here?

New(ish) French Preview - Daniel
I don't think anyone else noticed this preview, but it's a French one. It was written by Overgame, a french games site, last week. It's only one page long with a few screenshots, but still quite a good summary of TS if you speak French. Click here to read it.

Friday 20th August 1999
TS Warez - Daniel
You may remember me mentioning, on August 9th, that a version of TS had been stolen and copied. Well, this information was true, and you heard it first at Tiberian Explosion! Here is what has happened:

The full game was sent by Westwood to all the gaming magazines in Germany, for them to review. Somehow, a copy was stolen and put on an Internet site for people to download.

There are many reasons against doing this:

Got that? Just don't do it. And if you know of any URLs involved, do not give them to anyone else.

More, more, more screenshots - Daniel
Are you getting tired of this? Probably not. There are yet more exclusive, new, stunning screenshots available. This time they are from the German version and are at TS Underground. Here is the usual sample:

FIRESTORM DEFENSE - Click to Enlarge
There are some cool screenshots, featuring a MM2 attacking an Orca Bomber, the Nod Temple, the GDI Tech Center, the Firestorm Defense and a deployed Mobile Sensor Array.

Guess What? More Screenshots - Daniel
TS Center have posted 11 new screenshots of the English version of Tiberian Sun. Check them out at TS Center.

Victory for TS - Daniel
Yeah! It looks like we have one the Gamenation Poll, "Which upcoming game are you most looking forward to?". Here are the results:

Tiberian Sun: 5795 votes/76.27%
System Shock 2: 0 votes/0%
Quake III: 83 votes/1.09%
Age of Empires 2: 72 votes/0.95%
Diablo II: 1648 votes/21.69%
Well, Diablo II were winning at the start, then Tiberian Sun quickly took a massive lead, with nearly four times as many votes as Diablo II. Face it Diablo fans, Westwood is a better company than Blizzard! Shame about Quake III and System Shock 2 though, as they are both gonna be huge games. Still, TS is the best!

Unit and Building Prices - Daniel
TS Landing Pad have posted a table with the prices of all the units and buildings in Tiberian Sun. Aaron Video Interview - Daniel
BG:TS was informed that All Games Network has just posted a video chat with Aaron Cohen. Here are the key points discussed:

Well, that's some good news for German's and for the rest of us! You'll need a copy of RealPlayer to view the video, which can be seen, here.

More New Screenshots - Daniel
TiberiumSun.com have received two new screenshots by e-mail. Here's a bit of one of them:

I think that's the first in-game shot of the EMP Cannon. Go to TiberiumSun.com to see both screenshots in full.

GDI & Nod Maps - Daniel
BG:TS has images of the first couple GDI & Nod maps on their site.

PC Action Screenshots - Daniel
TiberianSun.de have posted 13 new screenshots from the German mag, PC Action. Here's one of them:

TS for just $19.95 - Daniel
Beyond.com are offering Tiberian Sun for just $19.95 ($49.95 with a $30 rebate) during the next week or so. Click here to pre-order.

Battle Clans ready - Daniel
Westwood's Battleclans service is now up, so if you have a Tiberian Sun clan, sign-up now and add it to the growing list (which was 18 pages long when I looked). You can view ladder rankings, administer your clan, give it a flag, and much more!

JUST 7 DAYS!!! - Daniel
We have only 7 days, a week, until the official release of Command and Conquer 2: Tiberian Sun. And some shops will be releasing it up to 3 days early! Here is an e-mail I received from Wayne Edmonds:

If you are in the U.K and i case you dont know already.... I think you might be surprised to find it in the shops either on the 23rd August (monday i think) or perhaps on 21st August. I know of about 250,000 just arriving and they are not going to hold on to them for long.
Good news, eh? But I doubt we will be getting it tommorow! Still, it looks likely that most shops, in the USA and UK anyway, should have it sometime early next week!

Wednesday 18th August 1999
That's Better! - Daniel
TS is now at number 1 on the Game Nation poll, "Which upcoming game are you most looking forward to?" It now has 75%, with Diablo 2 now way behind with just over 20%. Quake III, AoE2 and Sys Shock 2 haven't really had many votes at all. Keep it at this place, by voting now!

No Demo - Daniel
Rade has said: "There isn't a TS Demo available at this time."
At this time? So, there will be one in the future? Let's hope so. The demo mentioned earlier was just an old preview video.

New Screenshots - Daniel
Here are a couple new screenshots, from TS Underground:

Click to enlarge Click to enlarge
Here are some interesting observations I've made:

C&C: Renegade Review - Daniel
PC Gamer should have the first ever printed review of C&C: Renegade, in their next issue. This game is Westwood's first First Person Shooter based in the C&C Universe. They say the preview will be five pages long and include some great screenshots:

They will also have some info on C&C3 (Tiberian Twilight), so check out their 'Next Issue' page.

TS DEMO??? - Daniel
This is rather suprising news, as Westwood have said there will be no TS Demo, so this may not be true, but anyway:
Radio 583 (a radio station in Holland) announced this on their web-site:

Fans of Command & Conquer, pay attention!
As of 4 'o clock this afternoon, you'll be able to download a demo of Tiberian Sun. This way, you'll be able to see what the game, that will be released on August 26th, will look like. We'll give 100 people the chance to download the demo each day, so be quick!
So see you wednesday afternoon....
Thanks to Tim, of Planet C&C for translating this from Dutch to English. Head over to Radio 583's Web Site to try and download the demo!

Release Date News - Daniel
Some of use may have less than 7 days to wait now, as I have seen several reports of stores releasing it on the 24th. However, EA say this is the day the game starts shipping, which could take a few days. EA sent this e-mail to Toe Nail who pre-ordered from them:

Currently in stock (as of August 15, 1999)
Release date: August 24, 1999
So it seems C&C2: Tiberian Sun will start arriving in the shops (and people's homes) on the Tuesday, August 24th, 1999, and should be available nearly everywhere by Friday, August 27th, 1999 or a few days after this. I'm happy :)

Vote for TS - Daniel
Game Nation are holding a poll in which you can vote for the upcoming game you're most looking forward too. The choices are Quake 3, Diablo 2, AoE 2, System Shock 2, and of course, C&C2 (notice how they're all sequels!) Currently, Diablo 2 is in the lead, with TS slightly behind, but you can change that! Go vote for it now!

Tuesday 17th August 1999
Wierd Shadows! - Daniel
Lachlan sent this info to BG:TS regarding an anonymous screenshot they received:

Notice in this picture (apart from the bad graphics) that most of the shadows face the wrong way? Have a look at the billboard, it has a lightpost on one side, and the shadow going another way.. Also, the pink infantry has his shadow going yet another way...Same with the buildings. (The tree has it shadow actually pointing to the light...)
Well, that's rather dissapointing, maybe it's actually a fake screenshot, because I doubt Westwood would make a mistake like that!

Release Date - Daniel
Several people have contacted Babbages, and have been given dates ranging from August 24th to September 1st. I think the date may depend on location (state and country), but we should all be able to get our hands on copies by September 1st (and probably sooner)

SGN Articles - Daniel
SGN has posted a couple of TS-related articles:

PC Gamer Cover - Daniel
The Forgotten Sect has an image of the cover of next month's PC Gamer. It shows an image of the Renegade from C&C: Renegade and has a summary of their preview. It also mentions a first peek at C&C3.

Very Cool Picture - Daniel
Cyberman from WW Underground has posted this very cool image:

You can download two versions of it:

Tiberia Competition - Daniel
The French TS Site, Tiberia are giving away a free copy of Tiberian Sun. In order to enter you must be at least 13 years old, from anywhere in the world, and must enter before August 20th. You cannot work for Tiberia.
So to enter, go to their front page, click on the TS Box on the right and enter these form fields:

Simple, eh? Now, go and enter, and good luck!

10 DAYS LEFT! - Daniel
There are now only about 10 days left until the official release date of Tiberian Sun, and it's completely definite this time! In about 10 days, depending on your timezone, we should all be playing this long-awaited game. I, for one, am very happy!

Graphics Article - Daniel
Sociopath from BG:TS has received a well-written e-mail about how graphics don't really matter in a game, and the state of the on-line gaming community. Here's an excerpt:

To continue, I really doubt Westwood spend several years doing GRAPHICS for Tiberian Sun. Do you think they spent all this time just working on the graphics? Hell no. Graphics are nice, and to those companies out there that think graphics are what make a game, shame on you. Graphics don't do sh** for me. I would rather play a game with great playability (as well as replayability), than I would a game with great graphics.
You can read the rest at BG:TS.

Another GENCON Preview - Daniel
This one was written by Mephisto_I:

GenCon has come and gone and all that's left is an overwhelming urge to get my hands on C&C: Tiberian Sun. Yes, I am big fan of real time strategy games (RTS), and C&C series is even more special to me. Sure there have been some great RTS games, but none of them managed to grab and hold my interest for so long.
Read the rest here.

Mammoth Mark II Info - Daniel
Here is some good news which BG:TS received:

No, you could just hit escape to change the speed. And it didn't take 20 seconds to fire. It may have seemed that way, but it did have few seconds between shots. Plus, the Mammoth Mark II's power and armor may have been reduced in multiplayer. Like in Red Alert, the demolition truck's explosion in single player games was a lot more powerful than the multiplayer explosion. Just thought I'd give you my opinion.

Maz
Pat Masarik
Maz203@aol.com

I suppose that's good news, it's a shame they reduced its power though :( Still, the game wouldn't be fun if it wasn't properly balanced!

Hi-Res Disruptor Tank Image - Daniel
TS Galaxy has an image of a Disruptor tank with resolutions up to 3000 x 3000! Here's a thumbnail:

You can download the hi-res version at TS Galaxy.

Massive Tiberian Sun Interview - Daniel
Thresh's Firing Squad have had a large interview with Brett Sperry of Westwood. There are 70 screenshots and other images, many of which are completely new. Here's an excerpt:

What's the coolest thing about Tiberian Sun?
No one thing is the coolest. It's the total package that makes Tiberian Sun cool. Everything works together to provide an experience that's satisfying on many levels. In general I love the strategic dynamic between all the units and I really love the kinetic battlefield which is a result of voxels, lighting, great sounds, high energy weapons and so much more. I love so many aspects I can't name one and it is too early to tell if I will favor one side over the other. The whole Nod dynamic is very, very cool and GDI is also a bit...meaner than ever before!
Read the rest here.

Shockwave Preview - Daniel
Strategic Gaming Network have made a cool preview of Tiberian Sun. It is made with Shockwave Flash, and includes a few screenshots and some units information. You need a shockwave plug-in to view it, which can be downloaded from The Shockwave Site. The preview, which is just over 1Mb, can be viewed here.

TS Graphics - Daniel
Sociopath of BG:TS has written a small article on Graphics Scalability in Tiberian Sun:

Alot of you may have seen the new screen shots and thought "wait a sec, those aren't that wonderful". Well for a fan, or someone who hasen't been around alot thats a good question, but for a webmaster to report about the quality is just plain pathetic. The graphics base in any game is scalable to a certain degree, notice the term any. So if two people play the same game, one with a standard video card, and one with a Riva TNT 16mb; take a wild guess which person is going to get better and faster graphics? The person with the faster card of course, but this dosen't mean that you can only play with a top of the line card, anything with direct X will work.

Westwood has capitalised on this with advanced scalability tactics, becuase they are looking to market this game on all scales. Believe it or not not everyone in the whole world have a Vodoo 3k, the nice people over at Lucas Arts seem to think everyone does, but Westwood has a little more common sence than that and has tried to make the best possible game that can and will be played on middle to upper class personal computers, they have effectively made Starcraft "breakthroughs" look playable on a 486, and gone far beyond blizzard's original standards to bring a game 10 times better without rasing the processor standard any higher.

One more thing on this subject, when you look at future images, remember a few things:

Am I the only one who can see the insanity of this?

So there it is, the graphics in Tiberian Sun could be a lot better than some of the screenshots we've been seing recently!
But in Tiberian Sun, a 3D card makes no difference! The graphics will depend on processor speed, RAM, and whether or not you have MMX or AGP.

No Tiberian Sun Demo - Daniel
TiberianSun.de have posted this article about the TS Demo. It has been translated by BG:TS:

Sorry people, but it seems as if there will be no playable demo. The PCA often calls the videos (here probably the TS Trailer) as a demo. Accordingly I can give the 'all-clear' signal: although on the PCA Website under demos " C&C3 Tiberian Sun " is mentioned, they probably only mean the German Trailer.
So there will be no TS demo, at least not before the game's release, but I think there may be one sometime in September or October.

Sunday 15th August 1999
Night Missions question - Daniel
Felipe sent this Q&A to TSNNZ:

Felipe: Are there night time missionz in multi-player/skirmish games?
I know you have answered this lots of times, but someone told a webmaster that spotlights are available only on single player. V-Ted: Yes.
I also have some rather dissapointing news about the Mammoth Mark II. Cyclone from TSD was in the #TS chat room and saw some people talking about this unit. They said it took over 1.5 minutes to destroy a harvester due to it's extremely slow reload time. We'll have to wait and see...

New Fan Fiction - Daniel
TiberiumSun.com received this story called Resurgence. It follows a GDI Admiral on a mission to get revenge for the death of his wife and daughter in a Nod Nuclear attack. This is a huge story, 24 pages long! Here's a small excerpt:

That missile had a package of immense doom for its target, and that doom was contained in the nuclear warhead on the tip of that missile. And that warhead was heading right for the city the GDI utilized most, and the city Jacob Mullen cherished most. Not for its exquisite architecture or its romantic quality, but because his wife and daughter were sitting, eating lunch in his daughter’s hospital room, while his wife read her an Italian version of Cat in the Hat.
The rest is at TiberiumSun.com.

VTed Q&As - Daniel
JT from Planet CnC asked Virtual Ted, Westwood's webmaster these questions:

JT: Will Tiberian Sun ship on DVD, if so, how many disks then?
Ted: Maybe. Time will tell if the demand is great enough.

JT: Is the "Zoom" function still in the game?
Ted: No. We decided to take it out because it offered no benefit to game play.

EB, Babbage's, Westwood - only! - Daniel
Virtual Ted has confirmed that the Platinum Edition will only be sold at EB World, Babbages, and directly from Westwood. So, unless you have pre-ordered from one of those stores, you will not get the Platinum Edition. Sorry!

Stunning new Mecha! - Daniel
Kassy made this cool 3D rendering of a mecha. It's made from various junkyard objects, as you can see from the wheels and the hammer:

Cool, isn't it!

Battle Clans - Daniel
Westwood Underground had a short chat with Virtual Ted about the workings of Battle Clans. Take a look at WWU to see the interview. VTed did say that information will be given out as soon as the official clan site goes live. This will be at http://www.battleclan.com/, but currently that URL just redirects you to Westwood's Site

New Screenshot - Daniel
BG:TS have received a new screenshot from an anonymous source. Here are two cool things in it:

Head over to BG:TS to see the full-size image.

Platinum Edition in Shops - Daniel
Zyklone-B sent an e-mail in to BG:TS:

I just talked with an EB guy in Florida a couple of hours ago regarding the availability of TS Platinum Edition, and he assured me that "his" store will stock both regular and Platinum for retail sale to the public. He also toll me that EA will ship a very limited number (less than 20) to each EB store in the US...it is up to each store manager to put all copies on display or keep some of then for VP (that's what he say, it is not a typo!). So, guess that we people that didn't pre-ordered will get that infamous Platinum Edition...but we may have to wait in line until EB opens each store that Friday...very interesting, do you agree? And, of course, I can save the shipping costs!!

Shipping at EB World - Daniel
EB World ship the game one day before the official release date. This would mean they ship it on the 26th, but they are actually shipping on the 25th of August. And will do so unless they receive different instructions from Westwood.

Soviets in TS as well??? - Daniel
I received this e-mail from Kirk Stephen sent me this interesting bit of information:

I don't know about allies in Tiberian Sun but I remember reading on another TS web site a couple of months ago that part of the storyline was that Kane was using a variation of chronosphere technology to travel back in time to kill several of the soviet rulers and bringing their armies into the future to fight for NOD. This would make sense as NOD were defeated in the war in Tiberian Twilight and their forces would be low. I do not know who was the original source of the story so cannot confirm if it is relliable.
Thanks Kirk Stephen!
