The Global Defense Initiative was founded on 12th October 1995, to enforce the United Nations Global Defense Act (UNGDA). It is led by Brigadier General Abra Shepherd, Chief of Staff, United Nation Military Command.
GDI have the job of maintaining peace on Earth and preventing Kane, leader of The Brotherhood of Nod, from destroying the world. Nod is making tiberium missiles and GDI have to stop them with their experienced marines and high-tech, high-energy weapons.
GDI aren't worried about defending the world from Nod soldiers. They are worried about Nod's experiments with Tiberium and genetic engineering. Kane is using the power of this ore to mutate human DNA and create a new breed of super-soldiers. Unfortunately, he's created a race of dying mutants, called The Forgotten. Only GDI can save them.
The GDI operate from the space station Philadelphia and also have centers in the United States, Canada, Russia, Brazil, India, Australia and Britain.
